Want

Want, need, desire, question, love and hate.

I have always wondered whether these are primarily verbs, or nouns.

Well, here’s what I’ve always wanted. A primary want, almost a need.

Th story’s posted at Want.

  1. The eternal struggle of a parent , at least in the recent times. I think its a very fine line, leaving the kids to decide what they want and deciding for themselves what is good. Its a tough line and few parents excel at it.

Good one Suchi. Splice of life! Short stories are brilliant are they not?

    • Nivi,

You know, this is one reason I put what I write on blogs; the thought process behind what I wrote and your interpretation of it is so markedly different that it is exciting.:)

My story was based on the concept of ‘want’ and what happens if there is a conflict of interests. The father-son portrayal was just one way to showcase it.

Regarding what you said, I think the key is ‘what is good’. It is a murky question indeed, for ‘good’ varies contextually. Tough to draw the line, true. But there again, there are parents who try to live through their children and repeat history minus the faults they perceived in their own history!

And yes. “Brlliant” is not the word! :D

  2. The main issue with want is that they are in conflict. As long as a want is from ourselves, we have the capacity and the drive to go and get it satisfied. What remains unsaid and therefore, undone is when the want comes into conflict with those of others. In such situations, there is nothing much one can do other than to let go of the want.

The conflict of interests is just not between the father and son; the greater conflict is the father’s. On one hand there’s what he wants, on the other, the desire for his son to be happy (which is the perceived end result of the first desire). The fact is that both HIS wants are in conflict. In that sense, he cannot get what he wants because the only person stopping him is himself. Strange isn’t it!
      Thanks
